On July 15th, James completed his first Half Ironman 70.3 Race in Racine, WI! The race consisted of a 1.2 mile swim in Lake Michigan, a 56 mile bike ride around the Wisconsin countryside, and then a 13.1 mile run in Racine. Whew!
James had to be at the race at 5am, so Jack and I went up to Racine later that morning. James's mom, sister, and our nephew George came too!

It took awhile to get the kids assembled and over to the race area, so we were only able to catch James on his run. We saw him running at about the halfway point. It was so hot that day (about 90 and sunny) and he had been swimming/biking/running for about five and a half hours by then.

The run portion was a loop, so we waited and were able to catch James as he went out for his final loop and then came back again.

And then James finished! We were so proud of him. His time was 7 hours, 41 minutes. Not the time he was hoping to get, but it was his first half ironman race and he was just glad he finished it! At the time he said he had no interest in doing that race again... but then a few weeks later he was looking at different half ironman races for next summer. Who knows!
